Laura McCoullough is a medical scientist, working in the Revill Group at the Victorian Infectious Disease Reference Laboratory (VIDRL), Doherty Institute. Laura completed her PhD studies at the Doherty Institute, researching using CRISPR-Cas13b as a novel treatment for chronic hepatitis B. Her work has been published in highly respected peer reviewed journals, including the Journal of Hepatology and Journal of Virology. Laura has also identified an HBV splice variant that strongly reduces HBV replication in cell culture.

Outside of the lab, she works to raise awareness of HBV in the broader community, presenting her work to community organizations, and participating in the HBV Research Showcase organized by HepBcommunity.org (for which she has won two awards).

Laura was on the planning committee for the Emerging Scientific Workshop at the 2025 International HBV Meeting in Berlin. She was awarded the inaugural 2024 ACHV (Australian Centre for Hepatitis Virology) Scott Bowden Award for HBV Research.
