Jochen Wettengel, MD, PhD

Jochen Wettengel2Dr. Jochen Wettengel is a physician-scientist and group leader at the Institute of Virology at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), and an adjunct assistant professor at the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).

He holds dual academic training, having earned a BSc and MSc in Molecular Biotechnology from TUM and a medical degree (MD) from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) and TUM.

He received a PhD in Experimental Medicine with highest honors (summa cum laude) and continued his research as a postdoctoral fellow at OHSU, before returning to the Institute of Virology to continue his specialist training in Medical Microbiology, Virology and Infection Epidemiology.

His research focuses on the molecular determinants of viral entry and cell and species tropism, particularly in the context of hepatitis B virus (HBV). He specializes in engineering recombinant viruses and developing innovative assays to localize intracellular viral particles and distinguish infected from non-infected cells. Bridging molecular and clinical research, he advances antibody profiling and novel virological diagnostics assays for the detection and characterization of viral infections.
