Stanford University School of Medicine

Ed Pham png2Dr. Edward Pham is an instructor in medicine (Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology) at Stanford University School of Medicine. He grew up in Vietnam, completed his undergraduate in Bioengineering at UCLA where he graduated summa cum laude. He received his MD and PhD in Microbiology & Immunology from Stanford University.

His commitment to medicine and research was inspired by his mother’s successful battle against chronic hepatitis C, which underscored the transformative potential of biomedical science in improving patient lives.

As the Deputy Director for Translational Research at ViRx@Stanford, the Stanford Biosecurity and Pandemic Preparedness Initiative, his research focuses on the development of novel therapeutics across a broad spectrum viral pathogens with pandemic potential, including coronaviruses, dengue virus, enterovirus, and influenza virus, where he co-lead programs advancing both direct-acting and host-targeting antiviral candidates toward clinical evaluation. In parallel, his investigations into virus–host interactions have revealed therapeutic targets with broader implications for chronic diseases such as HBV, HDV, cancer, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and obesity-associated metabolic disorders. He has been recognized by many prestigious awards such as the Soros Fellowship for New Americans, Gates Millennium Scholar, Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
