Prof. Yuen is Chair Professor at The University of Hong Kong and holds the Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation Professorship in Medicine. He is also Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong. After earning his MBBS in 1992, Professor Yuen pursued further academic distinction, obtaining three doctoral degrees: Doctor of Medicine (awarded the Sir Patrick Manson Gold Medal, 2001), Doctor of Philosophy (2005), and Doctor of Science (2017).

His research focuses on the prevention, natural history, serology, virology, and treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C, as well as hepatocellular carcinoma. Internationally recognized as a leading authority on hepatitis B, Prof. Yuen has published over 630 papers in prestigious medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Nature Medicine, Lancet Infectious Diseases and Lancet Oncology and Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology. He has delivered more than 360 lectures worldwide.

Prof. Yuen leads numerous international clinical trials investigating new antiviral and immunomodulatory therapies for chronic hepatitis B. He is also serving as a consultant and scientific advisor for many international pharmaceutical and biotech companies for developing novel agents for hepatitis B disease. He is also at the forefront of research into novel biomarkers for hepatitis B and occult hepatitis B infection. His expertise is sought by several international coalitions, including the International Coalition to Eliminate HBV (ICE-HEP) and the Coalition to Eradicate Viral Hepatitis in Asia Pacific (CEVHAP). He is a member of the Asia Pacific Liver Disease Alliance and serves on the Advisory Council of The Hepatitis Fund, a Swiss-based foundation.

About the Witte Lecture: 

The Witte Lectureship was established by Hepatitis B Foundation Cofounders, Janine and Paul Witte, in remembrance of their son, Bruce, to allow for a distinguished leader in the field to visit the Hepatitis B Foundation and Blumberg Institute to make a presentation and meet with scientists and public health leaders. It is the HBF's most important named lecture.
