La hepatitis B generalmente no afecta el crecimiento y desarrollo
normal del niño. La mayoría de los niños con infecciones crónicas
de hepatitis B gozan de vidas largas y saludables. A diferencia
de otras enfermedades crónicas, por lo general ninguna incapacidad
física se asocia con la hepatitis B, y generalmente no existen
restricciones físicas para estos niños.
Estoy planeando adoptar un niño. ¿Debo pedir que le
hagan análisis?
Su agencia de adopciones debería poder informarle si al niño
le han hecho análisis de hepatitis B. En el caso de adopciones
internacionales, es recomendable que usted no solicite que
le hagan análisis al niño en el país de origen pues el propio
análisis de sangre podría ser fuente de infección.
¿Qué pasa si el análisis de la hepatitis B le sale
positivo al niño que planeo adoptar?
Darse cuenta de que el niño que usted desea adoptar tiene
hepatitis B crónica puede ser triste, pero no debería ser razón
para alarmarse ni para detener la adopción. Esperamos que un
diagnóstico de hepatitis B no le haga cambiar su decisión de
adoptar un niño. Tenga la seguridad de que la mayoría de estos
niños gozan de vidas largas y saludables. La hepatitis B generalmente
no afecta el crecimiento y desarrollo normal del niño, y por
lo general no hay incapacidades ni restricciones físicas asociadas
con este diagnóstico.
¿Cómo puedo proteger a otros miembros de la familia
si el análisis de la hepatitis B le sale positivo a mi hijo?
Los padres, hermanos y demás miembros del hogar deben ser
vacunados. Los familiares y parientes, cuidadores, amigos y
otras personas deberían considerar la vacuna si tienen contacto
estrecho y frecuente con el niño.
¿Existe algún tratamiento a disposición de los niños
con hepatitis B crónica?
Actualmente, dos opciones aprobadas de tratamiento están disponibles
en Estados Unidos para niños con hepatitis B crónica: (1) Intron
A (interferón-alfa) y (2) Epivir-HBV (lamivudina). Sin embargo,
no todos los niños (ni todos los adultos) que tienen hepatitis
B necesitan tratamiento. Usted debe consultar con el pediatra
especialista en hígado para determinar si su hijo se beneficiaría
de alguno de estos tratamientos aprobados. Ya sea que decida
iniciar un tratamiento o no, su hijo debe visitar regularmente
a un especialista en hígado o a un doctor experto en hepatitis

Hepatitis B does not usually affect a child’s normal growth
and development. Most children with chronic hepatitis B infections
will enjoy long and healthy lives. Unlike other chronic medical
conditions, there are generally no physical disabilities associated
with hepatitis B, nor are there usually any physical restrictions
for these children.
I am planning to adopt a child, should I request that
he or she be tested?
Your adoption agency should be able to tell you if a child has
been tested for hepatitis B. With an international adoption,
it is advised that you do not request that your child be tested
in the originating country since the blood test itself could
be a source of infection.
What if the child I am planning to adopt tests positive
for hepatitis B?
Finding out that the child you wish to adopt has chronic hepatitis
B can be upsetting, but should not be cause for alarm or stopping
an adoption. We hope that a hepatitis B diagnosis will not change
your decision to adopt a child. You can be reassured that most
children will enjoy a long and healthy life. Hepatitis B does
not usually affect a child's normal growth and development, and
there are generally no physical disabilities or restrictions
associated with this diagnosis.
How can I protect other family members if my child tests
positive for hepatitis B?
All parents, siblings, and other household members should be
vaccinated. Extended family members, childcare providers, family,
friends, and others should consider vaccination if they have
frequent and close contact with your child.
Is there treatment available for a child with hepatitis
B?
There are currently two approved treatment options available
in the United States for children with chronic hepatitis B: (1)
Intron A (interferon alpha) and (2) Epivir-HBV (lamivudine).
However, not every child (or adult) with hepatitis B needs to
be treated. You should see a pediatric liver specialist to determine
if your child would benefit from one of these approved treatments.
Whether you decide to start treatment or not, your child should
see a liver specialist or doctor skilled in hepatitis B on a
regular basis. |
