HBF and University Oxford Partnership
The Hepatitis B Foundation took a big step forward when it extended
its educational reach across the pond and joined with the University
of Oxford in the United Kingdom to create a research training program.
Called the STEER program (STEERing post-secondary students into Science and Technology Entrepreneurship and Research career paths), the new HBF and University of Oxford training program is aimed at preparing college graduates for careers in the fast-growing areas of biomedical research, public health and biotechnology. The HBF will select up to three individuals who will begin training at the HBF and then be eligivle to enroll in scientific studies leading to a doctoral degree from the University of Oxford.
"It's very important to try to train people in basic research, and this program
provides the wherewithal to do it," said world-renowned scientist
Prof. Raymond Dwek, FRS, Head of Oxford University's Department
of Biochemistry. "Oxford has one of the largest biochemistry departments
in the western world, and there is only one other place in the United
States we have this prgram set up. Achieving this agreement has
been a triumph and it's a real token of esteem for both the
university and the Foundation." Read Full
